    Summary:

    Last time we continued a message series on Matthew titled, “The Gospel of the Kingdom.” We are now into chapter 24 of that book, which is something called the Olivet Discourse—a sermon from Jesus about the end times. In it he explains the events surrounding the end of the age, which is what the disciples had been asking him about. They wanted to know when that was going to happen, but he gave them an answer that was more focused on how they should live in light of the end, than the actual timing of the end. Well, this week we’ll look at a passage where he continues by speaking of a time of great tribulation. That’s just a fancy word meaning trouble and suffering. It’s all going to get kicked off by something called “The Abomination of Desolation.” Last week I talked about the last days—which I believe we’re currently living in—but we have been living in them ever since Jesus spoke these words from Matthew 24. But now he’s talking about the end. We finished last time with him saying, “this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed through the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” So he picks it up there in v. 15, where we’ll begin Sunday morning. We’ll examine this important passage and consider what Jesus actually teaches about the future. And just know before we get into it—there are different ways people have interpreted his words. So I’ll talk about that, too. There are actually many views about the order of the end times. But like I said last week, we need to be focused on being prepared—and living our lives in light of this truth—that Jesus is coming back. And this world will not go on forever. We shouldn’t be scared by this, but we should be encouraged and sure about our faith. He is in total control. Nothing surprises Him. No matter what is currently happening in our world.
