A Question About Divorce

A Question About Divorce

May 25, 2025

Passage: Matthew 19:1-12

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

We've been covering the book of Matthew for quite some time now, and we're making progress. Some parts are easy and encouraging, others are more difficult and we have to wrestle with the text. We've just come through a section like that––where Jesus taught about the importance of humility. And let's face it, humility is hard for us. It means we have to think about others as being more significant than ourselves. We have to confront our pride and selfishness and step out of that. We're called to humble ourselves, and love one another--even the hard to love ones––the wayward ones, and then we're called to forgive without limits. So this Sunday we're moving on to another section, but unfortunately the subject matter doesn't get any easier––as Jesus teaches about marriage and divorce. He gets asked a question about divorce. Divorce is something that nobody likes, but has touched almost everybody. Many have experienced it personally, but it's safe to say we all know someone––maybe a close friend or family member––who is divorced, or is contemplating divorce. It's an issue today. But did you know that it was also a big issue in New Testament times? There were big debates that divided people on the issue of divorce––and what constitutes a legitimate reason for a divorce. Sounds like our world today.
