Passage: Matthew 12:22-37

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

In the passage we covered last time, Matthew took a break from the ministry and teachings of Jesus and turned his attention to his attributes. We learned some names. Yes, he is Jesus the Christ, the Son of the Living God, but he's also called Servant, Chosen, Beloved, and Hope. He has many other names, too, but those we focused on were from the short reference to Isaiah 42––which foretold who Messiah would be and what he would do. It was a good time to look at these things because sometimes we get caught up in the narrative and we need to take a step back and remember who Jesus is. But this week we're back to the story––to the chain of events which has led to Jesus being doubted and questioned by the religious experts. They were so offended by Jesus that they wanted to kill him––and it's at this point where they started planning how that might happen. This time we'll look at a ridiculous accusation against Jesus, by these same Pharisees. That's how it begins, but then we see Jesus' response which gets to the heart of what motivates us. It winds up on the subject of fruit and its meaning. Fruit reveals something about us. Jesus says, "A tree is known by its fruit." So we'll explore what that means. It's not what's on the outside that matters to God––it's the heart. However, our fruit––what is produced in our lives––reveals what's going on in the heart.
