Passage: The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 1 Corinthians 14:1-25

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: To God's Church

Summary:

We've been talking about love on Sunday mornings because 1 Corinthians 13 is all about love––the truth about agape love––and the relentless, never-ending nature of agape love. It's been great to reframe our priorities around this idea. No matter our gifting in the church, love should be preeminent, it should be practiced, and we should be persistent in it. God has called us to pursue love––and even though it is the sign of spiritual maturity––we don't love just for our own spiritual growth. We love others to build up the body of Christ. So that we might be a church that makes the love of Christ visible for all to see. This Sunday, we’ll continue in that theme of love––but we'll be in a much more difficult chapter. We've really got to hang on to the love of chapter 13 as we try to make sense of 14. This week we'll look at 1 Corinthians 14:1–25 and a message titled “Building From The Inside Out.” In the passage, Paul challenges the church at Corinth––and the local church here in Fredericksburg––to think differently. To look at how we use the gifts of the Spirit, and what we do when we gather as a church. What we do and what we say and the gifts we use should strengthen and encourage one another, while not forgetting there are people among us who need to hear the gospel clearly. So that their lives might be transformed. From this potentially awkward and confusing passage, we will see that the church is built from the inside out. We grow together in love for Christ and for one another, while at the same time we love the outsider by explaining the truth to them––to those who are skeptical, hurting, or far from God.
