Passage: 1 Corinthians 3:10-15

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: To God's Church

Summary:

The Bible is clear about salvation. We are not saved by our works, instead we are saved by Jesus. His death on the cross was the full payment for all our sins––past, present, and future. We are saved by grace (God's unmerited favor) through faith (trusting belief) in Jesus––not by works. I hope you have received and believed this message. I try to make it clear every Sunday, no matter what passage we're covering. When we repent (turn from our own sinful way and turn to God in faith) and believe in the gospel (the good news about Jesus), we are made part of God's family––his called out people––the Church. We've been studying a letter to God's Church in 1 Corinthians, and the writer, Paul, has a lot to say to the church. Namely, that we're to be all about the gospel in our teaching and how we live our lives. We're to be united in Christ and the gospel. And God is building something in us and through us. He's building His Church. That's how we're described at the end of v. 9 from last week. Paul calls us "God's Building." This week, as we cover vv. 10-15, he's going to encourage us to build this building on the foundation of Jesus Christ. For that is the work we've been called to do. It's not just for Paul and the Apostles, or for preachers and pastors, it's the work of the Church, the body of Christ. And he's going to talk about how that's done––and what materials we use––building materials. And even though we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone––the work we engage in as God's servants––will one day be judged. It's going to be reviewed––shown to be what it really is. So this is a different kind of judgment, perhaps, than the one you're thinking of. If you believe in Jesus, there is no condemnation––you have been declared not-guilty, so we don't face the kind of judgment that will send us to hell for eternity––and yet our works will be judged––and rewarded. Based on what types of building materials are used. Are we building with perishable materials? Or imperishable? That's the question.
