Passage: Matt. 21:23-27

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Matthew 21 has been a real eye-opener so far. We've seen a different side of Jesus. He's come into Jerusalem like a king––and be praised as King and Messiah. To the praise and adulation of the people. We've seen him go to the temple and turn over tables and chairs and drive out the people who were doing business there. We've seen him curse a fig tree for not producing fruit. And the tree withered and died immediately. All the while he's still teaching and healing. Like a man on a mission. But all of this got him in trouble with the authorities. It was all part of the plan––he was trying to do that. Nevertheless, in our passage this week, the religious leaders––the ones who had authority in the temple––are going to come ask him, "By what authority are you doing these things?" See, they were the authorities, and their territory had been invaded. They never gave permission to Jesus to do any of these things. So they confront him. And that's what the passage is about––this confrontation and what we can learn from it. There's actually a lot we can learn from it.
