Divisions In The Church

Divisions In The Church

Aug 24, 2025

Passage: 1 Corinthians 1:10-18

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: To God's Church

Summary:

We have started a journey through a new book––1 Corinthians. It's a letter, actually, written to a church that was experiencing some problems. It's not surprising, however, since Corinth was such a diverse place with people from all over the world and from all walks of life and from different faith backgrounds. This is the way the church has been ever since the Day of Pentecost. There are divisions in churches. The wisdom of the world seeps in––and our human way of doing things becomes more important. The 21st century church has fractured into literally thousands of groups, or sects––each claiming to have the right message, the right beliefs, the right Jesus. What are we to make of this? Aren't we God's church? Aren't we supposed to be unified? Paul makes that argument in 1 Corinthians––and he's going to address it more than once. He was writing to just one church, who had specific issues and differences of opinion, but I think the prescribed remedy is for all churches. Paul's focus in this part of the letter is on the preaching of the cross. That is what unites us––the true gospel message––something we need to agree on. Because he's going to demonstrate that the gospel is divine wisdom, and is in contradiction to the wisdom of the world––which is what ultimately divides churches. It's our human way of doing things––and believing in that over the power of the gospel––that leads to divisions in the church.
