Passage: Matthew 8:28-34

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

After delivering the Sermon on the Mount Jesus was described as "one who had authority." His teaching demonstrated it and his works demonstrated it. After that sermon he healed many people––which showed he had power and authority over sickness. Then he spoke to the wind and the waves and stopped them from storming––demonstrating his power and authority over the natural world. Next we'll see that he has power and authority over demonic spirits, too. Matthew 8 is written to demonstrate that Jesus has power and authority––over everything. He simply speaks––and it is done. This has huge implications for our own lives––it's why we should trust Jesus with them. He is able. In our text for Sunday we're going to see him heal two demon-possessed men. It's kind of shocking how he does it––and it causes people to be fearful of him. They even ask him to leave their region. It's strange how people responded to Jesus––and it's still strange today. They don't know what to make of him. They still see him as a threat to their way of life. They see his followers as a threat, too. But the truth remains––Jesus has power and authority. That doesn't change––regardless of what people believe about him. Jesus is the same yesterday today and forever according to Hebrews 13:8. He is a stumbling block for some, and for others it seems foolish to believe in Him. However, He is the power of God and the wisdom of God. (1 Cor. 1:24)
