Passage: 1 Corinthians 4:1-7

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: To God's Church

Summary:

Last time we looked at 1 Corinthians 3:16-23 and I talked about three questions that we all need to answer: Don't you know you (church) are the Temple of God? Don't you know you're a fool for Jesus? Don't you know you have all things in Him? This time and in the message following we'll be examining that second question because Paul's going to bring it up again in chapter 4. Don't you know you're a fool for Christ? But what does that mean? That's what we're going to discover. In the first part (this Sunday) we'll see Paul describe himself and Apollos as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. But what does that mean? And why should we care? He also says they were faithful to their calling––to be judged by God alone. In other words they were doing their jobs for an audience of one. They were working with all their heart, as if working for the Lord and not for men (Col. 3:23). There's much we can learn from this chapter of 1 Corinthians––to discover what it means to be a fool for Christ––but also how to evaluate your pastor or church leadership. I'm sure there are many opinions on the matter, but seriously, what is important? The section (1 Cor. 4:1-7) ends with more questions that we need to wrestle with–-because they demand that we deal with our pride. Pride was a problem for the Corinthian church––it was dividing them. We have the same problem in America today. When pride comes to church, it divides.
