Passage: 1 Corinthians 4:8-21

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: To God's Church

Summary:

We started a two-part series last Sunday titled, "Fools For Christ." This has been a theme for Paul in his letter to the Corinthian Church. He has mentioned this idea that believers are not wise according to the world––we're fools––but we're fools for Christ. And he's used himself as the chief example. In our text for Sunday, he's going to come right out and say it: "We are fools for Christ's sake." But he's saying it in contrast to how the Corinthian Christians saw themselves. Because they didn't see it that way. They thought themselves wise. And that's really the focus of this last part of 1 Corinthians 4––a focus on the already, but not yet nature of the Christian life. Yes, in Christ we have all things. But to think the Christian life––this side of eternity––is all triumph and prosperity, and no trials or persecution––that is a flawed view. Built on wrong expectations. Yes, we are already given all things in Christ––and we can find satisfaction in Him––we can be truly filled to overflowing––but we've not yet reached glory. That will come in time. We should be certain of it––and lives our lives as if we're certain of it. But it doesn't mean that our lives will be easy or untroubled in the meantime. And if we think that we've arrived, and we're living the best life now––like the Corinthians thought––then Paul has some words for us.
