Passage: The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 1 Corinthians 9:19-27

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: To God's Church

Summary:

Last Sunday we looked at Paul giving us his rights for the sake of the gospel. If exercising his rights put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ, then he was willing to give them up. Even though this letter was written 2,000 years ago to a church and a people we don't know––to a very foreign culture––there is still much to learn from Paul's example. I mentioned four takeaways from last time and one of those was: The gospel must remain our highest priority. Which is something Paul is going to make even more clear about his life and ministry in the second half of 1 Corinthians 9. He says in v. 22, "I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel..." In 1 Corinthians 9:19-27, the Apostle Paul challenges believers to live with purpose, discipline, and a heart committed to reaching others for Christ. Just as athletes train to win a prize, Paul reminds us to run the race of faith with endurance and focus, pursuing the eternal reward that God has promised.
