Passage: Matthew 2:13-23

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Sometimes we just need to get up and go. No planning. No overthinking. No second-guessing. God prompts us to do something and we follow Him. Doesn't always make sense, but since we trust Him, we get up and go. Joseph–the earthly human father of Jesus–was visited twice with this message in Matthew 2: Get up and go! And this wasn't merely a suggestion–he needed to go and go quickly. And as we'll find out it wasn't just for his safety and the safety of the child, Jesus–it was in fulfillment of prophecy. God doesn't do anything by accident. Jesus came into the world as a man at just the right time in just the right place–it happened in the fullness of time. And when he placed Jesus in Bethlehem, along with Mary and Joseph, it was no accident that King Herod would come after them. He was afraid of what would happen if a legitimate heir to the throne might come along one day. So Jospeh obeys God and he takes his family to Egypt. And they escaped from Herod's plan to kill the baby Jesus. But then he is instructed in much the same way (Get up and go!) to go back–not to Bethlehem–but to Nazareth. And with each step of the journey Jospeh was obedient, God was sovereign, and prophecy was fulfilled.
