Passage: 1 Corinthians 3:1-9

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: To God's Church

Summary:

As we enter the third chapter of 1 Corinthians, I want us to start seeing ourselves as a church––a family united by Jesus––and functioning as a living body––not just individuals who happen to love Jesus in a similar way. It's a change in perspective that we need––to see things as they really are––and how God has revealed them in His Word. Last week I talked about how important and essential the Bible is to our lives. God speaks to us through His Word. We spend an awful lot of time trying to discern the will of God––and answer the big questions of "Who am I? What am I supposed to do with my life? What is my calling?" And those are great questions––and they are very personal questions. The answers are found in God's Word, not in the wisdom of the world. But we need to be asking these questions in community as well––again, as a family––for we've been called into a family, not just to be an individual Christ-follower. Paul wrote this letter to the church––not just to individuals. And it's in this chapter where he starts to explain what the church is––this week we'll look at the idea that it's a field (think of a farm), and next week we'll look at it being a building. In both metaphors God gives the growth––and that's very important. No matter what we've been called to do individually––how we've been gifted to serve the church (God's family)––the results are ultimately accomplished by Him and for Him. It's not about us, although we receive joy when we work in this way––and we receive eternal rewards for serving God in whatever way he's called us to serve.
