Passage: The Gospel According to Matthew Matthew 23:13-36

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

When studying the life and ministry of Jesus, have you ever wondered what prompted him to say harsh words to people? For the most part, he seems to have love and grace for the sinners he comes across. We like to think he has mercy and grace for us. But what makes him angry? Have you ever considered that? Like when he drove out the money changers and pigeon dealers from the Temple in Matthew 21. It was at that time Jesus spoke about what made him do such a thing: "The Scriptures declare, "My Temple will be called a house of prayer," but you have turned it into a den of robbers." There are places in Scripture where Jesus has harsh words for people. We're going to look at one of those passages this week––often called the seven woes––where he declares at least seven sorrowful warnings. These warnings were pointed at the Scribes and Pharisees––the religious leaders of the time. They were the most religious people around. But at the same time he's talking to his followers and his disciples. Almost like he wants them to know what makes God angry––or what breaks the heart of God. Have you ever wondered about that?
