Passage: Matthew 9:9-13

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

The call of every disciple is the same––"Follow me." It's that simple. Jesus calls people to follow him. And they may not be a certain type of person, either. This is where we get confused or we misunderstand the Christian faith. If you are a Christian, then at some point you have responded to the call of Jesus to follow Him. He does it the same way today as he did in the book of Matthew––when he called Matthew––who was an unpopular tax collector. He simply came by one day and said, "Follow me," and Matthew literally got up and followed Jesus. His life was forever changed. Our lives were changed because of this one simple verse––Matthew 9:9. Jesus calls people to himself. And these people aren't perfect––in fact––they are sinners––every single person he calls. So when he calls Matthew in Matthew 9:9 it represents Jesus going to the least-likely person and asking him to be a part of his everlasting Kingdom. I like this story because it reminds me of me. Jesus came to me in the same way––knowing I was a sinner––a hopeless sinner who didn't deserve such grace. But instead of punishing me, or giving me what I deserved, he invited me to join him in abundant life. Jesus calls sinners––and that's all. He only calls sinners. For he says in Matthew 9:12-13––"Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick...I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."
