Passage: 1 Corinthians 2:6-16

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: To God's Church

Summary:

As we continue our series on 1 Corinthians, a letter written to God's Church, we've seen a theme emerge: wisdom. Paul has made it clear that the wisdom of the world doesn't understand or accept the gospel message. And there's a reason for that––worldly wisdom doesn't lead you to God. So you might come away from the first chapter and think that wisdom is bad. Maybe we should just be dumb and not pursue wisdom at all, or seek it in any way. However, Paul also mentioned something that will come into focus in our text this week–––1 Corinthians 2:6-16––and that is another kind of wisdom: The Wisdom of God. There is a true wisdom––in contrast to worldly wisdom (what the world thinks is wise)––and that true wisdom is a "secret and hidden wisdom of God." Sounds so mysterious––and it is––Paul even uses that word, mystery, to describe the hidden wisdom of God. But the point is that God's wisdom has now been revealed in Jesus Christ––and can be understood through the Holy Spirit. Last week I asked you to consider your indwelling (Who is dwelling within you?) and it was leading up to the this next section of the book. Paul is going to teach us that the Spirit is the key. How can we know God? How can we know the wisdom of God? or true wisdom? Only those who have the Spirit can know. 1 Corinthians 14 says, "The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned." That is a foundational verse and explains the world we live in. Why is it so hard for people to trust Jesus and believe in the gospel? Why do believers and non-believers see and think so differently? And have different worldviews? It all depends on having the key to God's Wisdom. Do we have it or not? And what does it mean for the believer to have the Holy Spirit living inside of us?
