Passage: Matthew 12:15-21

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

What's in a name? If someone asks you about your name, the answer is probably, "Not much." Because most of our modern English names don't mean more than a memory of a loved one, or perhaps it's a family name, or maybe it just sounds nice. Names are important because they describe us––even if they're just to identify us. But back in the day, names really meant something. They were titles and they spoke of some attribute. For example, the name Jesus (Hebrew: Yeshua) means Deliverer, or Savior. Christ is a tilte, but it's also a name and it means Anointed One. But Jesus had a bunch of names––or titles––or attributes. Emmanuel––God with us. The Word––who came in flesh and dwelt among us. King, Lord, Friend, and many more. In the passage this week––Matthew 12:15-21––we take a break from the teaching of Jesus, and the controversy it caused––to look at who Jesus really is, and his mission. It's primarily a quotation from the Old Testament prophet, Isaiah. But it gives us a glimpse of the true mission of Jesus and the true person of Jesus. It reveals his names. And ultimately we'll see that in his name we find hope, which is what we desire and need.
