Passage: Matt. 21:12-17

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Last time we covered Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, where he rode into town like a king––and was celebrated and hailed as King and Savior. Only it wasn't what anyone expected. The expectation was that Messiah––the much anticipated Son of David––would come as a conquering king. On a war horse. With an army. However, Jesus came on the colt of a donkey, with no army but the poor and outcast who became his followers. But it was a celebration, nevertheless. It makes you wonder how it could have gone from that scene––where the crowd was shouting "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"––to the same crowd shouting, "Crucify him!" by the end of the week. The passage we'll cover this week may help explain this transition. As I said last Sunday, Jesus was very deliberate during that last week––very public with who he was and what he came to do. It would be obvious. And when his actions didn't match the expectations of the crowd, nor please the religious leaders, it would lead to his arrest, trial, and crucifixion. But again, this was all part of the plan––even getting a crisis response from those religious leaders. Their hand would be forced. The passage we'll cover today is one where Jesus drives out those who were doing business (and shady business at that) in the Temple Court. He overturns tables and chairs. It must have been a spectacle. But he was doing a little house cleaning, you might say. He was cleaning up the Temple, which was needed. The church can learn something from this episode, namely, that we should be zealous for what Jesus is zealous for.
