Passage: Matthew 10:34-42

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

If you’re like me, you often wonder what Jesus meant when he said some of the things he said. Even if we’ve walked with him for a long time, there are some things that still make us down right uncomfortable. They are hard to explain. But the Christian life is made up of both doctrine (teaching) and experience. Sometimes it takes a while to understand what Jesus meant—those things that we take on faith but don’t make sense (yet). But hopefully—at some point—the Holy Spirit and our experience give us understanding. Such is the case with Jesus' words from Matthew 10:34-42, which we’ll cover Sunday. He tells his disciples that if they love their parents more than they love him, then they’re not worthy of being his. He tells them that if they refuse to lay down their life, they’re not worthy of being his. He warns them not to cling to their lives, for they will be lost. And all of this is just so confusing to us. Family is good, right? We should prioritize them, right? Surely Jesus doesn’t want us to die? Why is he saying these things? There’s something we need to see in these words—and experience in our lives. When we put Jesus first, we find life—real gospel life.
