Passage: 2 Samuel 11:1-13

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: The Life of David

Summary:

The passage this week is interesting, to say the least. I've been talking about how David was often a picture–a foreshadowing–of Jesus. We've seen him as the conquering king. We've seen him as the loyal grace-giver. We've seen him love well. We've seen him rely on God and give credit to God–glorifying God. He was, in fact, God's beloved. But this week we'll look at a weak moment in 2 Samuel 11. It happened late one afternoon, a long time ago. It's a time when David allowed his flesh to guide him instead of being yielded to the Spirit of God. It's not a time to make excuses for our man, but instead to allow the story to speak to our own weakness. There's something to be learned about us–and our inability to exhibit the character of God without being firmly planted and abiding in Him.  Jesus said in John 15:5–"I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." What we're going to see in 2 Samuel 11 is a man who was bearing much fruit–who was abiding in God–filled with the Spirit, but turns–just for a moment to his own selfish desires, and he gives in to temptation. It sets up a whole series of events that would end in disaster and shame.  It's a hard lesson, but a good one. All of God's Word is good and "useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work." (2 Tim. 3:16-17)
