Passage: 2 Samuel 11:14-27

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: The Life of David

Summary:

As we follow the life of David, we're continually reminded of the contrast between the strength of God and the weakness of man. David was a great and powerful king, but only because God was his source of strength. He was also a godly man–but again–only when he was connected to God and abiding in Him. I mentioned a passage from John 15 that speaks to this. In John 15:4-5, Jesus says, "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." We saw the fruit that comes when a man (even a godly man) acts on his own accord–in his own power–following the flesh–yielding to temptation. In 2 Samuel 11 David was just lounging around on his rooftop. He saw a beautiful woman–Bathsheba–bathing, and he lost control. Whatever willpower and morality he had in himself was no match for the temptation before him. He could have her–and that's all that mattered in that moment. He didn't seek a way out. And so he gave into the temptation. It was a costly thing. She became pregnant and then David tried to cover his sin–only it didn't work. And as we pick up the story this week, we're going to see a desperate man still trying to cover up his sin. He goes to unthinkable lengths to keep his reputation in tact. We're going to see once again that two wrongs don't make a right.
