Passage: Matthew 9:14-17

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Clearly, Jesus came to challenge the deeply held beliefs of people––all kinds of people. For the diseased and the broken he demonstrated his power to heal and make whole. For the outcasts and misfits he demonstrated that God loves them and chose them to be his people. For the religious elites he demonstrated that they were not as good as they thought they were. In Matthew 9, we've just read three things that summed up why he came––and who he came for––"Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice.' For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners." All of these statements challenged the deeply held beliefs of what God was like and how he related to his people. These were shocking things to say. As we continue the story this week, we'll see Jesus ushering in a new era in how we relate to God. He's going to talk about the old and the new. We're going to see him suggest that He is the fulfillment of the old ways––but at the same time he is the beginning of something new. In the process he emphasized the need to let go of the old and embrace the new. There's a lesson in there for us, too. Not many of us (if any) are trying to earn salvation and favor through the Old Testament law, but we still cling to things we don't need to. Jesus came to bring new life, and we should embrace it.
