Passage: Matthew 18:10-20

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Last time we visited the disciples' question to Jesus: "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" Jesus' answer was surprising, perhaps, and counter-cultural. He said, "Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." But that wasn't the end of it. He wasn't done answering that question. He talked about the need to receive little ones in the faith––likening them to children, because they exhibit the humility of a child. And he also warned them (and us) of the danger in leading one of these little ones to sin. It got kind of thorny and uncomfortable when he talked about temptations to sin, and the need to remove those temptations. But again, he's still answering that question: "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" He continues that answer in at least the next eleven verses. This week we'll look at vv. 10-20 where he teaches another parable about lost sheep, then talks about what to do when someone's sin is found, or made known. So it's a bit of both lost and found. In these two distinct teachings, however, Jesus continues to answer that original question: Who is the greatest? The one who humbles himself, yes, but also the one who cares for and seeks for the lost, and who the one who forgives.
