Passage: The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 1 Corinthians 8:1-13

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: To God's Church

Summary:

It was such a blessing to have Kyle Kroeger with us last time, sharing about how God builds his church on the college campus. It's important for us to realize that He is building and strengthening His church in so many different places––with different types of people. He is reaching them and transferring them from the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of His Son. He's doing the same thing here in and through our church. This Sunday we're getting back to a series I started last year on 1 Corinthians. And this week we'll look at a passage––1 Corinthians 8––which is about food sacrificed to idols. So at first glance we think there's nothing in there for us, I mean, we don't struggle with that type of thing today. Maybe back in Corinth in the first century, but not in 21st century America. But to think that would be to miss the entire point of Paul's writing. Because he wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to instruct us––people of the 21st century West––just as much as he instructed the first recipients of this letter. Contrary to being irrelevant, the issues he brings up are completely relevant to church life in the 21st century. He addresses the relationship between knowledge and love. While knowledge can make us confident in our freedom in Christ, Paul reminds us that love must guide how we live and serve one another. Christian maturity is not measured by what we know, but by how we use our knowledge to build up others in faith.
