Misplaced Fear

Misplaced Fear

Passage: Matthew 10:26-33

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

The phrase, "Do not fear"––or something like it––is the most used command in the Bible. It occurs hundreds of times throughout Scripture. I think God is clear in his messaging. So why do we still struggle with fear? What are we afraid of? Is our fear misplaced? We are in the middle of Matthew 10, and last week we were told to "expect opposition," but there's more to it. The more complete message from last week was, "expect opposition, but do not fear." Jesus continues that theme this week––as we move to v. 26-33. In those verses alone, Jesus says, "Have no fear", "Do not fear", and Fear not." Three times he repeats that familiar phrase. But are we listening? And is our fear misplaced? The reason I ask is because although Jesus says, "Do not fear," he also says, "Fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell." So he's saying, "Don't fear them––fear God."
