Passage: Matthew 16:1-12

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Last week we finished up Matthew 15 with a look at Jesus feeding the 4,000––a distinct miracle and different from the feeding of the 5,000 in chapter 14. Similar, but not the same. The reason it seems so similar is because the twelve disciples questioned Jesus again as to how they were supposed to buy food for all those people. Jesus––unwilling to let them go away hungry––wanted to feed them. And although they had just seen Jesus feed a giant crowd of hungry people with five loaves of bread and two fish––the disciples were still unsure. They didn't get it. In fact, all throughout this book of Matthew we find them not getting it over and over again. It was a theme with them. This week we find them missing the point of those two miracles––and his warning to them about the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. It's easy for us to pick on the twelve disciples for their 'little' faith, thinking that if it were us, we would have believed and trusted Jesus completely. However, I'm not sure. Because we have the same trust problems today. Yes, Jesus did all those miracles, and He's called us out of the world to follow him, and he died for our sins, but we're still unsure. Could we also be missing the point?
