Passage: Matthew -13:43

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

This week we will continue to look at the Parables of the Kingdom from Matthew 13. Last week we looked at perhaps the most famous and foundational one––the Parable of the Sower. It had to do with four types of soil and how they received and responded to seed being sowed in them. Sadly, only one out of the four was conducive to producing fruit, or obtaining the desired result. The rest either didn't develop at all, or were short-lived, or were choked out by thorns. And I mentioned how it's confusing and goes against our presuppositions about people. We read into the parable and try to imagine which kind of soil we are. But as I said last week, I don't think that's the point. We need to realize that good fruit will only be produced in the perfect environment––perfect soil, perfect heart. The problem is that none of our hearts are good, and certainly far from perfect. So how in the world can we expect to produce good fruit? We need a heart transplant––we need God to cultivate and perfect the soil so that we can grow as believers––and produce fruit. Now, that was one parable, but it leads us into three more that we'll cover this week and I think they're related. These parables involve weeds and mustard seeds, but also a little yeast, too. The difficulty with these parables is similar to the first one––we don't quite know what to make of them. We're not sure how to properly interpret them––even when Jesus gives us an explanation.
