Passage: Matthew 15:1-20

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

What matters to God? That's a very good question, and one we should ask when we evaluate our lives. Does he care about religious rituals? Is that what He wants from us? Do we keep traditions because we think they are expected of us? Do they give us a clean heart? These are the questions at the heart of our passage this week. The passage is Matthew 15:1-20 and it covers three teachings of Jesus. One was for the Pharisees and scribes–-the super-religious leaders at the time. Another was for the crowds who followed Jesus––who sought him for healing. The other was for the disciples––who were learning about what was truly important. In Matthew 15, we see controversy––Jesus is confronted by some religious types from Jerusalem. They're really into their traditions––so much so that they would disregard the actual commandments of God. They became hypocritical in their worship, but they expected everyone else to do the same. So when they heard about Jesus' disciples not following their traditions, they had a problem with that. But Jesus is going to teach them––and us–-what is really important to God. The religious leaders thought their traditions were important––and those traditions were supposed to keep people pure. Jesus is going to teach that it's what comes out of the heart that defiles a person.
