Passage: The Gospel According to Matthew Matthew 23:1-12

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Many thanks to Paige Findley who last Sunday gave us a full picture of the gospel––and how it changes our lives. It's transformational. We don't just accept Jesus and then wait until heaven. No, he works in and through us––"for we are his workmanship," as it says in Ephesians 2:10, "created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." This week we'll step back into Matthew, where we begin chapter 23, which is about the seven "woes" aimed at the religious leaders of the day. He's got some harsh words for them, but they serve as warnings to anyone who practices a hypocritical religious system. That is not the way of Christ. But before we get into that part we have vv. 1-12 where Jesus gives us a lesson on humility. He's going to point out the issue––for both the Pharisees and even for us today––and that is pride. Our pride is what leads to a hypocritical religious life. The antidote is humility. The key to the Christ Life is to practice what Christ practiced––humility.
