Passage: Matthew Matt. 22:23-33

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Last time we talked about the Resurrection and what wonderful news that was for a lost and hurting world––but it's still wonderful news for a lost and hurting world. Jesus is alive and we can have new life in Him! The resurrection is the miracle that provides the proof and assurance that Jesus wasn't just some traveling side-show claiming to be God's Son. The resurrection demonstrates that He is the Son of God, and has power over death, even. There were people back in those days who were skeptics. About the resurrection, in particular, but also about anything supernatural-––they just didn't believe in any of it. They looked at any miracle with skepticism. If it can't be explained by natural means, then it must not be true. Those people were called Sadducees, and they were yet another religious party (kind of like a political party) in Jerusalem. In our passage from two weeks ago––Matthew 22:15-22––there were two other parties represented. One was the Pharisees––they were the purists, or separatists. The other were the Herodians, and they were the secularists. And this week we'll see the skeptics, the Sadducees. Yes, they were religious––they believed in God––they just didn't believe in the supernatural. And they had a question for Jesus, just as the other two groups had. The question is about the resurrection, only it's quite ridiculous because they didn't believe in the resurrection.
