Passage: The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 1 Corinthians 9:1-18

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: To God's Church

Summary:

This week we'll continue our series on 1 Corinthians, where Paul is answering questions from an ancient church. These questions seem strange to us because of our 21st century Western context, but when you drill down to the principles involved, we're actually very interested in the answers. For instance, last week Paul was dealing with a question concerning meat that had been sacrificed to idols. Not exactly something we deal with today. However, we all have a conscience––and not everyone is on the same page when it comes to what's ok for a Christian to do. So it was good information for us. Paul landed on this great principle of loving our brothers and sisters––and if exercising our freedom in Christ causes them to stumble––then maybe we should choose love over freedom. This week's message is titled "Rights and The Gospel" and will focus on 1 Corinthians 9:1–18. In this passage, the Apostle Paul discusses the rights he possesses as an apostle, yet he willingly sets aside those rights for the sake of advancing the gospel. Just like last week, this ancient letter will challenge us to consider questions like: What rights do Christians have? When should we insist on our rights, and when should we surrender them? How does the gospel shape the way we think about personal freedoms and privileges? What can we learn from Paul's example of self-sacrifice for the sake of Christ?
