Passage: Ruth 1:1-22

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Ruth: A Bethlehem Story

Summary:

I hope your Thanksgiving was blessed and you were able to spend time with family and friends––thanking the Lord for his goodness and provision. He is always good, and perhaps we should spend more time in gratitude––remembering how good he is. His goodness is an essential part of the Christmas story, too. As we enter into Advent season, we should be reminded of Christ's coming into the world–-to save a weary people from their sins. But did you ever think about how this was accomplished? How did the goodness of God move in the lives of those who came long before the Christ child was born in Bethlehem? God is sovereign and had a plan from the beginning to bring the Savior––His eternal Son––into the world. So in the fullness of time, he was born in Bethlehem. But did you know that place––Bethlehem––had a story long before the birth of Christ? It does have another story––but it has everything to do with the birth story. Starting this Sunday––and throughout Advent––we'll look at the Old Testament book of Ruth. You might say it's another Bethlehem story, but one that needs to be told. Because it's another story of God's goodness––and of his miraculous work in the lives of people to bring about his will. Jesus didn't just show up one day in a stable in Bethlehem. There's a whole story of God's faithfulness that came before and leading up to that moment. He was planning the way––and pointing the way––all along the way.
