Passage: Ruth 3:1-18

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Ruth: A Bethlehem Story

Summary:

So we've been going through the book of Ruth for Advent this year. Why? Because it's an extension of the Christmas story––the birth of the Lord and Savior––the Son of the Most High––Jesus, born in Bethlehem. Jesus was born in Bethlehem to a specific couple, who came from a long line of ancestors. That place and lineage was very important. The Messiah, the Christ, would come in the line of Abraham, and in the line of David––it was planned way in advance. Ruth is a snapshot of that line. It's the story of David's grandfather and great-grandfather––and how God used this woman named Ruth and her mother in law, Naomi to bring all this about. It's a love story about Ruth and Boaz, but it's much more than that. It'a a God story because we found out last week that Ruth's love interest was actually a kinsman-redeemer, or family redeemer. That means he was part of Naomi's family. He was from the same clan as her husband, Elimelech. We'll find out what that means in more detail this week, but the important thing is how God used this unlikely series of unfortunate events to bring redemption to a young woman–-Ruth, and redemption to a family, and––most of all––redemption to all mankind. Because many years later the Savior would come from this line of people. And it all went down in Bethlehem.
