Salt, Light, and the Law

Salt, Light, and the Law

Nov 26, 2023

Passage: Matthew 5:13-20

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Last time we covered the beatitudes and it's interesting to note that "Blessed are the thankful" is not one of them. It seems like it would fit. But perhaps it's in all of them already. Because the beatitudes describe a person who fully trusts in God–and receives from God–all they need. They describe a thankful person–who realizes that "every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." (James 1:17) So let us be thankful today and realize what we've been given in Jesus–the greatest gift of all. We'll continue with Matthew 5, as Jesus moves from the beatitudes to another description of the Christian: salt and light. So we'll take a look at what that means–how to be salt and light in a world that desperately needs both. Then Jesus will talk about his relationship to the Law–the Law of Moses. He tells us that he came–not to abolish that law–but to fulfill it.
