Passage: John 20:1-18

Preacher: Rob Holster

Category: Easter Services

Summary:

The day Jesus died on the cross is called Good Friday and I didn't always understand why. But now I do. Our sins were paid for on Good Friday. His death meant life for us on Good Friday. Jesus paid it all on Good Friday. What seemed so dark––and it was––was actually the light of the world being extinguished––but only for a moment. It had to be done. Because we couldn't do it on our own. We couldn't make things right with God by ourselves. No matter how much good we do, it can never make up for the stain of sin on our lives. The Bible says in Ephesians 2:1 that we are "dead in our trespasses and sins." No, we needed a perfect sacrifice. That sacrifice was God's own Son––Jesus. He was the perfect "once for all" sacrifice (Rom. 6:10, Heb. 10:10)––"the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world." (John 1:29) All of this happened at the cross 2,000 years ago––the first Good Friday. It was such a Good Friday that although we can't earn our salvation––God has provided a way. "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Rom. 5:8) All that is required on our part is faith––faith in Him––for he has already accomplished everything God requires. Good Friday accomplished it all––no works required on our part. "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." (Eph. 2:8-9) And then there is Easter Sunday––the receipt––for the payment that was made at the cross. "Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said." (1 Cor. 15:3-4)
