Passage: 2 Samuel 8:1-18

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: The Life of David

Summary:

Sometimes we come across Bible passages that are just hard. Hard to interpret. Hard to understand. Hard to believe. And we're left wondering, "Why is that in there?" or "Why does God want me to know this?" Our passage this week is one of those tough ones. It's pretty straightforward–David conquers. But it seems so harsh–so difficult to understand how God could support such a man of war. And how a man after God's own heart could make a name for himself by defeating and subduing and destroying other people. Subjecting them to himself, even. And with one of the most beautiful pictures of God's grace in the entire Bible coming in 2 Samuel chapter 9, it's tempting to just skip chapter 8. But no, we're not going to do that because there's much for us to see. We're going to see that David was a conquering king–an imperfect king of an imperfect kingdom. But that conquering king with his military victories is pointing us to the ultimate conquering King–Jesus. His victories are spiritual and His kingdom is perfect. The victories Jesus has won are similar in that He has also conquered. He has conquered sin, death, and the devil. These are the enemies that we face–and they are the enemies of God's eternal kingdom. Much like the Philistines, the Moabites, and Edomites were the enemies of God's people, Israel.
