Passage: The Gospel According to Matthew Matthew 24:1-14

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

As I mentioned last time, we wrapped up our series in 1 Corinthians––for now. We'll return to it in the Spring, but this week we're heading back to Matthew––the Gospel of the Kingdom. The last time we were there we were in chapter 23, where Jesus was lamenting over Jerusalem: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!" This actually leads us into chapter 24 because Jesus will reveal the future for them. His heart was breaking for them. And chapter 24 begins what is known as the Olivet Discourse––it's two full chapters of Jesus talking about what is to come––for Jerusalem––and for the world. He describes the last days in this passage. Their world back then was filled with uncertainty, conflict, deception, and troubling news about current events. Same is true in our day. Just like the disciples, who asked Jesus, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" We wonder what the future holds, too. In Matthew 24:1-14 Jesus talks about the signs of the times and reminds His followers not to be troubled or deceived. That's important for us to keep in mind, too. He calls us to remain watchful, to stand firm in our faith, and to continue trusting him no matter what. As we go through this passage, we are reminded that even in the midst of turmoil and shocking news headlines, God is still in control, His Word is still true, and our mission is not finished. Jesus declares that the gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world before the end comes.
