Passage: Matthew 16:13-20

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

If you're familiar with the church and evangelism, then you've likely heard of the Great Commission. It comes from Matthew 28:18-20, "And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." That is such a great passage and it gives us the answer to "We believe, but what are we supposed to do?" We are supposed to go and make disciples. But then what is a disciple? What does a disciple believe? Well, that's where another great passage comes in––the Great Confession––and it occurs in the passage we'll cover Sunday morning––Matthew 16:13-20. Peter is the one who confesses that Jesus is "the Christ, the Son of the living God." It may sound simple and obvious, but it actually came by way of direct divine revelation––just like it comes to us in the same way. We don't come to this confession by natural thinking. God reveals it to us. As we've been going through Matthew, up to this point the disciples were on the cusp of really getting it, but not until Peter's great confession do we see true belief. This is a really pivotal point in Peter's life––and in the life of any true believer––when we can truly say we know Jesus––his person and his work. We'll cover this passage Sunday––and there's a lot more to it––as it has sparked debates that have lasted for centuries. Thankfully, there is no debate of the confession itself––this is what a Christian believes.
