Passage: Matthew 5:17-26

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

In the passage we covered last time–Matthew 5:13-20–Jesus talked about being salt & light. That is what we're called to be in order to do the work God has prepared for us to do. Salt seasons and flavors and preserves the lives of others. Light shines, illuminates the way to Jesus, and reveals how a Christian should live. But he also talked about the Law–and how he didn't come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. And I mentioned the different ways to look at that statement. At the end of the day, the Law–like the rest of the Old Testament–points to Jesus–it's all about Jesus. Jesus himself is the fulfillment of the Law and the prophecies. So it takes a renewed mind to see those Old Testament stories and poems and laws with Jesus in mind. Because ultimately, they do point to Him. We'll continue with Matthew 5, picking up right where we left off–with Jesus making a rather disturbing comment–"For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." So we'll return to those verses about the Law and righteousness as an introduction to the next part–which gets to the heart of the matter. Jesus is going to teach the Law, but He's going to give us the meaning behind the law. And we're going to see that it's the attitude of the heart that matters–when it comes to things like anger–which we'll take a closer look at.
