Passage: Matthew 5:27-37

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

When we last left this passage, we were right in the middle of Jesus making an important point. There were those in that day who were obsessed with the law–and keeping the law–and there are still those today who like to keep score, so to speak. Jesus made it clear that it was the heart attitude that was important, not just our physical actions or inaction. In other words, he got down to the heart of the matter. In the last part he talked about anger–making it clear that not only is murder wrong–but also the heart attitude that leads to murder. He said, "You have heard that our ancestors were told, 'You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.' But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment." Those words have a way of piercing straight to our hearts, because we're all guilty of being angry with someone. We need a renewed mind and new heart. Because ours is flawed–unable to see things properly–with grace–and unable to love with agape love–the love God has for us. Jesus continues to make the same point over and over as we continue in Matthew 5. This week, we'll look at what he says about some touchy subjects–like adultery and divorce. But the point is the same–it's about the heart–and our desperate need for a heart transplant. So that we might trade our heart of stone for his heart. And then we can love others with grace and mercy.
