Passage: Matthew 5:38-48

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Last time we covered some really touchy subjects. However, they were all parts of one simple argument made by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount–Righteousness (or the lack of it) is a matter of the heart. In other words, it's not about performing or outward appearances–it's way deeper. And we're going to find out as we go along that in order to actually be righteous–according to God's standard (not ours)–we're going to need a heart transplant. There are six examples, or sub-points, to Jesus' argument. So far we've covered four of them–anger, adultery, divorce, and vows (or oaths). This Sunday we'll cover the last two which have to do with revenge and loving our enemies. In these two examples we're going to see Jesus reveal a radical kind of love that should mark us as Christ followers. In addition to proving that righteousness is a matter of the heart, he's also inviting us to a beautiful, counter-cultural, and righteous way to live.
