The Importance Of Forgiveness

Passage: Matthew 18:21-35

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

We're going through Matthew 18, and at the beginning of the chapter the disciples asked Jesus, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" He answered right away––"Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." But as we've gone along, we realized something––he wasn't done answering the question. At least, that's what I think. So putting the last few weeks together, I think the fuller answer to the question, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" is in at least three parts: The greatest, according to Jesus are: Those who humble themselves, those who care for and seek after the lost and wayward, and those who forgive. And that forgiveness part is emphasized and defined better in the last verses of the chapter--which is another parable of Jesus––the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant. So that's what we'll cover Sunday morning and we'll see Jesus' answer to the question in the form of a story. It's a lesson in reverse––it's a story of what NOT to do if you want to be great. In short, if you want to be great, don't withhold forgiveness.
