Passage: James 4:1-10

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: The Rules of Following Jesus

Summary:

Last week we covered the end of James 3 and the subject of wisdom–that is–true wisdom that comes from above. We looked at what it is and where it comes from–it comes from God–and it is given freely to those who ask. But are we asking? That's what chapter 4 gets into–"You don't have what you want because you don't ask God for it. And even when you ask, you don't get it because your motives are all wrong–you want only what will give you pleasure." Is that true? Is that what is keeping us from receiving true wisdom when we desperately need it? We'll take a look at that question Sunday. And we'll also take a look at what else is missing from our lives–humility. These are hard days for that lost virtue. Nobody likes humble. Humble doesn't sell. But it's the overarching character quality of our Lord and Savior. It's also what we've been called to be as His followers. James says in 4:10, "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor." Let's take a look at what all this means. Let's discover the lost virtue of humility and how it can transform our lives today.
