Passage: Matthew 17:1-13

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

A verse we talk about at Christmas is John 1:14––And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." It's a Christmas verse because it explains how Jesus came in the flesh––in the form of a baby, but John was also referring to that day when he witnessed what is commonly known as the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-13). I like to call it the Unveiling, because it's when Jesus gave his disciples a glimpse of who he really is. He is the Word become flesh––God in the flesh––and when he dwelt among people he was clothed in humanity. The Transfiguration was the unveiling of that true identity. Peter, who had earlier revealed Christ's true identity, also had something to say of this event. He testifies in 2 Peter 1:16-18, "For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We saw his majestic splendor with our own eyes when he received honor and glory from God the Father. The voice from the majestic glory of God said to him, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.” We ourselves heard that voice from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain." This event had a profound impact on Peter, James, and John, who were there with Jesus that day. It was a picture of God's glory revealed through His one and only Son, Jesus.
