Passage: Matthew 14:13-21

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

We're coming upon one of the most famous miracles of Jesus––one that most people know about whether they're a student of the Bible, or not. It's the only miracle of Jesus that's recorded in all four Gospels, so it must have been a memorable occasion with lasting impact. The miracle we're covering this Sunday is Jesus feeding the five thousand. It's a story that is well known and certainly must have impacted those who were there to see it, but what does it mean for us? Does it matter to our lives today? My answer is obviously yes, I think all of the Bible is relevant and meaningful for today. It's God's message to us. And I think this story in particular provides deep insight into the person of Jesus Christ. Now, you might read this story and think of how great a miracle Jesus performed way back then, but there are truths about Jesus––especially the unique sufficiency of Jesus––that we need to see and believe in today. Through this story of the impossibly miraculous, Jesus demonstrates that He alone is sufficient to meet our needs. Even when we think there's no way––we're in an impossible situation––and we look to all sorts of other things to make sense of life, and we tend to go away from Him. We don't think He's the answer. To that he says––as he said to his disciples––"There is no need to go away." Provision is found in Him. Purpose is found in Him. Life is found in Him. All that we need is found in Him––even in the face of impossible situations.
