Passage: 1 Corinthians 5:9-6:11

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: To God's Church

Summary:

We continue our journey through 1 Corinthians Sunday with a message that seems out of place. Last time we were in chapter 5 where Paul talked about a specific case of sexual immorality and how that should be dealt with by the church. I left you with two takeaways: 1) We should grieve over our sin and 2) We should be who we are. And what I meant by that is when we became Christians––when we trusted in Christ and his completed work on the cross––we were changed. So our lives should be a process of continual transformation––into the new creation that God has made of us. The passage this week comes from chapter 6 and doesn't deal with sexual immorality––it deals with another issue in the Corinthian church. They were taking their petty grievances outside the church to be settled in the civil court system. However, the message for the church is the same, or similar. Paul is arguing that they were to remember who they had become-–and what they will do––after believing and receiving Christ. So he asks them several more "Don't you know?" questions. In essence he's suggesting that they think back to the past, think back to the present, and think back to the future. Back to what it means to be "in Christ," a new creation.
