Passage: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: To God's Church

Summary:

We start a new series Sunday on Paul's first letter to the Corinthian Church. Now, why would we do something like that? As I mentioned before I left on Sabbatical, we will pick up where we left off in Matthew at some point, but before that I wanted to get into something different. 1 Corinthians is a letter Paul wrote to a church in the first century, addressing issues in the church. But even though this letter was written to a specific church in a specific place, a long time ago––it's meant for us as well. In chapter 1, v. 2 he writes, "I am writing to God’s church in Corinth, to you who have been called by God to be his own holy people. He made you holy by means of Christ Jesus, just as he did for all people everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours." He makes a point––right at the beginning––that the church (any church) is first of all God's church. All local churches are (like the Corinthians) called by God to be his only people. Paul says God made those people in Corinth "holy," that is, set apart for a purpose. Have you ever wondered what are we supposed to do? What is our purpose?––as a church, I mean. I know I have. I sometimes ask myself, "What are we doing here?" Paul's letter to the Corinthian Church is very instructive in that sense. He spends a lot of time explaining who we are in Christ––not just positionally, but also relationally. We've been called––not just to be forgiven in Jesus, and enjoy the freedom that brings––but we're also called to fellowship. Fellowship with the Lord Jesus first, but that also means we are in fellowship with one another (the church). This is going to be such a great series and I'm very excited to get into it as we read this letter to the Corinthian Church, which in so many ways is a letter to us. We were meant to learn from it, grow from it, and practice it.
