Passage: The Gospel According to Matthew Matthew 22:41-46

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

In Matthew 22 Jesus is asked several questions by different groups of people who were trying to trap him––the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the Herodians. Normally these groups didn't get along, but when it came to Jesus, they all agreed––He needed to be stopped. So they banded together to ask these questions––to make Jesus look bad––hopeful that he would get into trouble with the Roman government or with the crowds of people who were in Jerusalem. And last week the Pharisees asked a pretty good question, actually––at least from our point of view––because it was practical. "Which is the great commandment?" In other words, "Which is the most important commandment in the Law of Moses?" We tend to lean in for the answer, which was "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself." And with that he summarized all the Law and the Prophets. What are we required by God to do? To love God and love others. It's really that simple. But back to the questions. After a series of questions, and after that question in particular, Jesus has a question for them. It happens to be the most important question ever asked. Which is fitting for Jesus who is King of Kings, Lord of Lords, God in the flesh. The question is, "What do you think about the Christ?"
