Passage: Matthew 19:13-22

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Have you ever wondered what God wants from you? In exchange for eternal life? In our story from Matthew this week we find a young man asking a similar question. He considered himself a good guy––and he kept all the commandments––but he thought there must be something else. I think a lot of people are like that. They have a "you get what you deserve" mentality. So they look at obtaining salvation and eternal life in the same way––surely there is something they must do to earn it––some kind of good deed. So that's what the man was asking––"What good deed must I do to have eternal life?" It's an interesting and thought-provoking question. We'll study Jesus' answer because it's interesting, if not troubling. We've been covering some of the hard sayings of Jesus in Matthew. Last week it was about divorce. Before that it was forgiveness, and prior to that it was caring for the wayward brother or sister. And all of it centers around this idea of humility––which is where we began chapter 18––with another question: "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." The short answer is: those who humble themselves.
