Passage: Matthew 16:21-28

Preacher: Rob Holster

Series: Gospel of the Kingdom

Summary:

Last time we covered the "great confession" of Peter, where he answered Jesus' most important question, "Who do you say that I am?" He responded correctly, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus told him that he didn't arrive at the answer on his own––it was revealed to him––by God. But then again, Jesus' whole earthly life and ministry was a revelation from God––God revealing himself to mankind in the person of Jesus. So that revelation continues this week as we look at the end of Matthew 16, where Jesus reveals his true purpose, his expectations for his followers, and he prepares them for the revelation of his glory, which comes in the form of the Transfiguration in the next chapter. But it would all come at a cost. I've heard it said that salvation is free, but it will cost you your life. Certainly it cost Jesus his life––he laid down his life so that we could have abundant life. But in the passage this week Jesus tells us, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me." In other words he's saying, "It will cost you everything." That is what is expected of a disciple. He goes on to say, "If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it." Let's spend some time exploring that statement––and more––as we look at what Jesus revealed about himself and the cost of following him.
